Post # 4 Critical Lens on Hate

"We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them."  ~Charles Caleb Colton

1. In your own words, explain what the quote means.

2. Explain whether or not you agree or disagree with the quote.

3. Support your opinion by describing a certain character, conflict, or theme from  William Golding's Lord of the Flies or Arthur C. Clarke's 'Hate'.

Your responses should be at least 250 words and are due at 3pm, Friday, 11/11.

  1. “We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

This quote by Charles Caleb Colton could mean a lot of different things. In my eyes this quote means that if you don’t like somebody or don’t get along with somebody you don’t want to be around them and or get to know them because you don’t seem to like anything about them. Another meaning for this quote in my eyes is some people are too quick to judge other people, and they judge a book by its cover. I agree with this quote in a way but in another way I don’t because of two reasons, the reason I agree with it is because it does seem true and most people do tend to hate everything about certain people and why I disagree with it is because people shouldn’t be so quick to judge other people and should try to get along with them.

There are several examples that support this quote in the book we recently read in class together and also in a short story called “Hate”. One example that I am going to share that supports this quote is in the book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding. When the group of boys all meet up and right off the start a lot of the boys go against Jack being leader because they don’t like how bossy he is to the other boys because they know who they are.

  2. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

This quote means that some people judge others by the way they look and not by their personality. I disagree with the quote because some people are just bullies and like to be mean to other people around them. In Lord of The Flies Ralph and Jack hate each other because Jack wanted to be the leader and Ralph got the leader job. So Jack and his tribe went their separate ways and left Ralph with the little ones and piggy. Jack and his tribe took piggy’s glasses to start a fire. They took his glasses when every one else was sleeping. Piggy had a hard time seeing. In Hate Tibor and Nick hated each other because Nick is the one who really found the capsule and Tibor took all the credit for it. Tibor got accused of killing the Russian woman. Tibor lied to the captain about the woman being in the capsule. He told the captain that there was no one in the capsule. Tibor always had dreams about people dying. Tibor hated the Russians because they killed his family and friends. So he started yelling at the Russian woman inside the capsule about how much he hated the Russian clan and he shook the capsule. He dropped the capsule back in to the water when he was done yelling at the woman in the capsule.

  4. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

This quote means a lot of different things, depending on your point of view. In my perspective I see it as meaning hate keeps us from each other. People tend to be very judgmental and decide either “Oh, they look different, I hate them.” Or “They look normal, I want to’ be friends.”

But in the case of hate, once you hate them you don’t try to get to know them. If you hate some one because of how you judge them then you’re cold. That and then you wont try to get to know them so you’ll remain hating them until they go away or change to what you like. I agree with this quote, hate is a very strong emotion, some people let it rule them, and others aren’t so cold.

In the book “Hate” by Arthur C. Clark the main character Tibor shows a lot of hate. He shows hate to the Russians for killing his brother. While I have sympathy for him I also disagree. When he finds Sputnik at the bottom of the ocean and realizes a Russian is in it, he’s quick to judge.

He didn’t know what they were like and he didn’t much care because he let his hate control him. He committed murder by suffixation. When he realized he killed a woman, he felt bad. But when he realized he was caught on a tape recorder, he was done.

"So he started yelling at the Russian woman inside the capsule about how much he hated the Russian clan and he shook the capsule. He dropped the capsule back in to the water when he was done yelling at the woman in the capsule."

I’m sorry to say, but Tibor never took the sputnik out of the water until the end of the story when they’ve already realized the woman was dead. Also your blog was a little list like. Next time try re-reading it to yourself to see who or what you’ve repeated several times. Also, I agree with “some people are just bullies and like to be mean to other people around them” but you also have to realize, those bullies never try to get to know the victims. So hate also rules them by their judgments.

  6. Hate is a very strong thing. Charles Caleb Colton’s quote is very meaningful. You can interpret it in many ways. To me it means that if there is someone that you don’t know and you see someone or hear someone being mean and “hating” them then you will do the same. Also if you see the person doing something bad you could begin to hate them. This is because your first impression on the person is bad. I agree very strongly with the quote. This is because I believe that it is true.

There are many examples of hate in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. One good example would be the hatred between Jack and Ralph. When they first meet they both want to be the leader. This then develops into hatred between the two. This is a good example of the quote because they never knew or got to know each other. Another great example would be between Piggy and Jack. Jack bullies Piggy throughout the book. He picks on him for his appearance. Jack never gives Piggy a chance to show the others who he really is. Jack just bullies him from the first time they see each other. This is a very good example of the quote because Jack “hates” Piggy for the way he looks.

Hate can be a very evil thing. Charles Caleb Colton’s quote means, to me that people need to get to know people before they judge them from appearance or your first impression with that person. You will never get to know that person because you wouldn’t give them a chance and “hated” them.

  7. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

What Charles Caleb Colton’s quote means to me is that if you don’t allow yourself to get to know someone then you might hate them by appearance for no reason. I agree with this quote mainly because you have neo reason to hate them. Hate is a very strong word to use for no reason. You may hate someone just by hat you see them wear or doing but not knowing anything about them, sometimes this might be out of jealousy.

One character that is a good example is Piggy from Lord of the Flies. When Piggy first got to the island no one had any reason to hate or pick on him. Then jack showed up and just saw that his name was funny and he was a little over weight and talked funny, but never really got to know him personally. Also later on in the story Piggy agrees with Ralf and sides with him rather than the hunters that is also when a hatred began between Piggy and Jack and Ralf and Jack.

Hatred is a very strong thing to have against someone sometimes just by appearance, even to say hate mean something big. That is why I think you should get to know someone before judging because you might end up having a lot in common and like each other. That is what Charles Caleb Colton’s quote means to me.

  8. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

To me this quote means multiple things. It could mean that people judge others too easily. They judge before they even say one word to them. You can’t just decide to hate someone before you speak to him or her. You have to get to know someone before you decide something like that. Another thing that this quote could mean is that you will never know a person to judge if you really do hate them or not because you already decided that you hate them. Hate is a very strong word and I don’t think that it should be used towards someone.

I agree with the quote. One reason that I agree with the quote is because I in the society that we live in today, we judge people a lot with out ever speaking to them. We just look at them and automatically decide that we hate them. I can honestly admit that I am a culprit of this myself. I don’t agree with how we judge others so easily. I think (just my opinion) that life would be a lot easier if we were not judging everyone so much.

In Arthur C. Clarke’s ‘Hate’, Tibor has a lot of hate towards the Russians. He hates them for killing his brother; he shouldn’t hate every Russian for that. Once he finds out that a Russian is in the Sputnik on the bottom of the ocean he automatically judges the person in the Sputnik. It isn’t fair for him to hate all Russians for one or a couple of their mistakes. He should not judge so easily.

  9. we hate people because we dont know them and wont know them because we hate them. When i hear this it makes me think of a few things like back in the old times when ther was lots of racism. the black people were hated by the whites and were only hated because of ther skin color. If people knew that they were no different than us they would not of hated them.also know one liked the jews but but if they knew them they would not hate them.

In my own words this quote means that kids just like us seem to judge people by what they look like on the outside and not what is on the inside. Yes, I agree with this quote because this is we pretty much do to hurt other people and other feeling. I really don’t know why kids or so judgmental but, I think we see our parents doing so we think it is ok to do. I know that it is wrong but, some other kids might think is funny and might just continue to do it because other kids might get a rise out of the other kids. Another thing is once you hat them you can’t get to know them or you chose not to get to them. I don’t know why people hate other people.

In the novel Lord of the Flies hatred occurred in so many places. One major person that showed this is Ralph when he got mad or upset that Jack got to the new leader of the group. He was being very mean to him and so then after that he had a small group and Jack had a group. Jacks group was the hunter and gathers for the food. Another person that shows this is Simon. He is so mean to Piggy when he is trying to talk to the other kids about things.

  12. The quote was very well written and I think it describes the bases for human nature. We are too quick to judge people. If a person hates another it is usually out of envy or pride. Most of the nations of the world disagree with certain points of the government and how a country should be ran. In sub fundamental circumstances it would be best to have people meet in the middle on decisions, but some think other wise.

On the teenage level it is harder to not be influenced by others. Though I am not easily forced into any situation that I dislike or don’t agree with. Hate is derived from deep psychological, scaring experiences. I hope that on some level people as a species would become more understanding when it comes to the reason that causes another to hate. It takes a lot for someone to hate. The very definition of hate is very hard to find, but it exists in the world and gets worst every second of every day with the continuing wars that crop up.

Hate is characterized in Arthur C. Clarke’s hate by the character Tibor. Tibor has a deep seeded hate for Russians. The Russians plowed down his city and killed his brother. When they committed such an act, the Russians had no idea what they were doing. They caused a deep seeded hatred to grow within Tibor. After he’d escaped in to Austria, he when on with his normal uneventful life. That was until he joined a pearling ship. On day while the crew when down to the bottom of a wadding pool Tibor found a lost Russian space craft and his hate comes to the surface. He is prepared to in act his revenge on the Russian that is found by him in the capsule. The woman that gets found dead inside has a tape recorder and in acts her own revenge on Tibor even in her death.

In my words if you hate, your hate becomes you.

  14. That quote means to me personaly don't judge a book by its cover. If you were to judge a stranger that don't wear the best clothes because there parent cant aford it. The character this reminds me of in L.O.F.T is Jack because he hates Ralph and they don't really know each other.

  15. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

I think this quote means that as a society we refuse to understand people, this causes assumptions to be made, which ultimately lead to unnecessary hate. I think that the quote could also mean that we don’t care enough to make an effort to get to know people. Also, I think that when we don’t take the time to get to know someone we “go with the crowd” and base our hatred off of our friends, family’s opinions and also rumors.

I agree with this quote because actions like this are seen everyday weather we are in high school, college, our homes, and in most cases in public places. However, when it happens people normally do not feel any remorse for what they are saying or even consider how what is being said will affect the person they are targeting life. I think this quote is very agreeable because “HATE” is just like “LOVE”. I say this because, just like with LOVE you cannot feel it in a split instant. Hate is the exact same way in the fact that both feelings take a relatively long period of time to form.

This is shown in William Golding’s Lord of the Flies with the relationship between Ralph and Jack. Ralph and Jack had a fairly good relationship in the beginning of the book. Most readers can even say that they were friends. However, after a long period of time the two boys begin to butt-heads and turn against one another. Jack’s hatred toward Ralph escalates to the point where he chases Ralph around the island and plans to KILL Ralph.

Another situation is located in Arthur C. Clarke’s short story ‘Hate’. This is between the main character Tibor and his past with Russian soldiers. The Russian soldiers had killed his friends and family. So, when Tibor found the Russian Sputnik with an astronaut inside he immediately began to torture the Russian astronaut. Now, the Russian astronaut never knew who Tibor or his family and friends were, however because it was a Russian, Tibor took his anger and frustration out on an innocent person. This is another example of how hate comes from anger and frustration that has been built up over a long period of time.

“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”- Buddha

  17. Rachel Reynolds,

Even though your post was well written, it is not accurate.

"In Hate Tibor and Nick hated each other because Nick is the one who really found the capsule and Tibor took all the credit for it. He dropped the capsule back in to the water when he was done yelling at the woman in the capsule."

This is innacurate for multiple reasons. Tibor and Nick never hated eachother, NO ONE knew that there was a woman inside the sputnik until after Nick opened it. Tibor was the only one that knew that there was a PERSON inside the sputnik. Finally, we do not know if Tibor was accused or not, and he never took the sputnik out of the water until the men brought it on to the shore, that is when Nick went inside the Sputnik and found the woman....

I think maybe you should reread the short story.

  19. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

It means that we don’t know or understand things that we are not familiar with and do not try to learn or understand these things. Strangers stay strangers; unknown remains unknown. We may never try to help or do something for another person because we do not know them.

I agree with his quote, because people tend to fear the unknown. I also disagree because some people are willing to take on challenges and often make changes which helps them to overcome the unknown and by doing this these people learn and change. These changes enable people to like maybe love these new people.
There are many different hated problems in the Lord of the Flies. The main one is between Jack and Ralph. They hated each other from the first day they were on the island. The main reason was because Ralph blew the conch and then he said that he will get the power over the entire island. So therefore Ralph and Jack hated each other from day one. Also many people hated piggy because he was very annoying and they picked on them because he was fat and had glasses. But the main thing is they all hated each other at one time or another.

In hate the Russian was trapped in the spaceship and the Man from Budapest hated each other because the Russians attacked his home land and killed his brother.

There are many people that hate each other and the hate continues for day to day. Also they can tell you how much they hate you.

  20. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

Not be cliché, but hate is a really strong word. I don't really know anyone who hates someone they don't know at all, and I don't know anyone who refuses to meet anyone because they hate them. The whole quote doesn't seem very accurate. I guess its possible to not like someone you don't know, but until someone does something to you personally, I don't think true hate is possible.
We have a lot of examples of hate in the world around us. There are people driven by hatred in our everyday lives. In the book "Lord of the Flies", my opinion is supported. From the beginning, it seems like Jack really doesn't like Ralph, and once he spends more time with him, jealousy and hate spring from their relationship. This idea is relevant both in the quote and in our everyday lives. As I mentioned before, you can really dislike someone without knowing them, but hate takes more interaction than that. But, if you do get to know someone better with it already in your head that you don't like them, it won't take long for a hateful relationship to develop.
Now if what I said is true, then how can there be people who are passionately and violently prejudice against races, sexes, or religions? That's where it gets more complicated. If one hates a group of people, seemingly without cause, we are all too ready to return the favor. I don't think that's how we should deal with those types of situations. You see, every person has only seen what they've seen. If someone has only ever met rude obnoxious Americans, then you can understand why they might "hate" Americans. If one showed them that not all Americans are like that, then they would realize that they don't hate the group, they hate what they think those people are like. That's why it's not possible. Even in " Hate", once Tibor realizes that the astronaut isn't the type of person he thought she was, he sees that he was wrong.

This quote means that when people don’t know them then they judge them. But when people judge other people they will go suicidal. That is why I don’t judge people unless they make me mad and then I judge them. I would say I disagree because I like to make friends with people even though I don’t know them and if they judge me then I would judge them right bad. I hate people that judge other people. I think that the statement has to go with the book “lord of the flies” because jack hates piggy and Ralf. I also think that the quote goes with the book “hate” because I think that they pick on the Russians well I don’t know because I did not pay attention in class. I would kind of have to agree to because some people don’t know what they are like and how they act so they might get hurt or something else. Well I don’t know what else to write about so I think this is going to be it.

I think that this guy is trying to say that you will hate someone that you don’t even know, because of who their involved with, or their race, out of jealousy, or who their related to, or even just because of how they look. I completely agree with this quote and I believe that this is how humans will always be.

Like in the “Lord of the Flies” the character Jack, hates Ralph from the start because he is the leader. Jack also hates Piggy off the start because he is fat. Or in “Hate” when Tibor discovers that there is a Russian in the satellite he instantly hates the person inside.

  26. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

To me this quote means that we hate people not knowing who they really are or not knowing them at all. Once you start hating someone, it’s hard to ever think that you would get a long with that person or try to get to know them. Some people are just quick to judge and could care less how that makes someone else feel. Hate is a strong word and I don’t think you should hate someone with out getting a chance to get to know them or knowing what they’re like. You might change your mind and not be so hateful.

I both agree and disagree with this quote. Yes, some people have a reason to hate one another. Sometimes, you just don’t like the crowd that the person is around, which does give you a reason to hate that person if you’re not into that stuff and it is a reason to not want to get to know them. I would disagree with this quote at the fact that people shouldn’t be so quick to judge and they shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Not everyone is going to be the same, and you might just be surprised if you got to know someone you thought you’d hate.

An example in the story The Lord of the Flies is when the whole tribe went against Ralph, they didn’t want to listen to his ideas or follow his rules. I think that Ralph was a great leader, and wanted to do what was best for all the boys on the island. Maybe if the boys got a chance to get to know him, they wouldn’t be so judgmental.

you shouldn't judge people by appearance or by what you hear because what you see and hear may be deceiving. also if you judge someone before you know them you may be passing up an opportunity to have an amazing friend.
in the society we currently live in people are judged everyday so it makes it hard not to judge people. though it may be hard to resist judging someone, you shouldn't be judgmental.

  29. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

This quote means that people will judge other people and find a reason to hate them, even if they don’t know them. People won’t take the time to get to know people and them hate them for no reason. No one wants to spend any time getting to know the person they hate.

I agree with the quote one-hundred percent. People will take one look at a person and will automatically say that they hate them. People will judge each other and if they dress a certain way or walk a certain way they will automatically hate that person. People don’t take the time to get to know one another. They don’t take the time to think of what they might have been through or what they could be going through at that time. If someone hates someone then they will not take the time to get to know that person.

This quote can describe Tibor and the Russian astronaut in Arthur C. Clark’s ‘Hate”. Tibor automatically hates all Russian because Russians killed his brother. When Tibor sees a Russian spaceship in the water he automatically hates the person inside, even though he doesn’t know anything about that person. Tibor doesn’t take the time to get to know the person inside the spaceship; he automatically takes the time to kill the person inside, even though that person doesn’t even know anything about Tibor and Tibor doesn’t know anything about that person.

This quote could mean many things. One thing it could mean is that people judge others too quickly and make judgments by the way someone looks and acts. There is a famous saying: “Don’t judge the book by its cover.”

Another meaning of this quote is that people hate a person automatically just because they don’t know what the person’s personality is like. And then, just a as the quote says, we won’t get to know them because we make judgments and hate them before we meet them. You have to get to know the person before you make your own opinions about him or her. Just because a person does look appealing to you or doesn’t have the nicest clothing doesn’t make them less than you. You should judge people as you would want other to judge you. Hate can keep people from getting to know other humans.

I agree with Charles Caleb Colton’s statement. People these days make judgments too quickly without even speaking to them. All people find themselves judging others when they are at the mall pr even on the street. But people should try to not do that and think of others as part of their family and ask themselves “Would I judge my family member or friend this way if I saw them for the first time?” In the end, everyone is equally the same.

This quote is shown in Lord of the Flies many times. One time is the beginning of the book when Piggy arrives on the island and Jack automatically judges Piggy by his name and that he is a little overweight. Another time where this is shown is when Ralph and jack don’t like each other. Jack doesn’t like Ralph because Ralph is appointed leader of the group. The littluns and some of the older boys don’t like jack because he is too body for them.

In the end, everyone should get along, no matter where they come from and what race or nationality they are. Everyone is equal.

  32. The quote "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton. This means that when we first see someone we don’t know we automatically dislike them. The reason is because we are not familiar with them.
I agree with this because a lot of people do this and it is so mean. I have seen it done, I have done it. I think that people shouldn’t do it any more. I think it makes the new people not welcome. “Don’t judge a book by its cover” this means don’t judge a person by their characteristics. You can’t just judge a person by their cover. Get to know them, hang with them do something with them. Then maybe you and that new kid on the block might something in common with you.

One example from the book would be Jack. He is a big jerk, his so mean. He enjoys picking on piggy. Piggy does not like being called piggy. Everyone in the tribe then begins to call him Piggy, just because fat. The truth is his not really that fat, yeah he may be a little bit bigger than the boys that’s because he is more fit. I think if Piggy got in a tussle with any one of the boys he would win.

Another example would be Jack being intimidated by Ralph at the beginning of the book. Then Jack got really jealous, having everyone listen to Ralph and not him with his ideas. So jack over throw him. then everybody listen to jack.

So just remember don’t judge a book by its cover.

  33. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

Charles Caleb Colton speaks very wise words. This quote can mean many different things; it depends on the persons’ perspective. In ways it means that because we have something against someone we won’t try to get to know them because either we don’t care enough to or we just don’t want to. That’s one-hundred percent true, if we don’t like someone we won’t get to know them or try to because in our eyes they’re just not worth our time at all. Lots of people tell others that it’s not just about looks; it’s about what’s on the inside.

In my opinion it happens in many cases, mostly through high school. It happens all the time… someone looks a certain way and that’s it, people might not like them just for their looks or what they wear. Human beings are very judgmental sometimes without even realizing it we’re judging someone. So often we are told by our parents or someone that is trying to be a good influence on us tells us that looks aren’t everything.

An example of this is Piggy in the Lord of the Flies. All of the boys make fun of him or blow him off because his name is “Piggy”. They call him fat and stuff like that. But on the inside he is very caring and sort of smart. He has a sensible personality. He is modeled as the super ego because he is an example of perfection always wanting things to go the right way and stay having a sense of civilization.

My overall opinion of Charles Caleb Colton’s quote is that everything he says is true.

Some people either don’t like one another or they don’t care for the other person. Sometimes we hate what others do. We might not like the decisions that other people have made or have chosen. You might not get along with other people.
I agree with the quote because you could like and dislike people that do wrong things or that do the right things. I think you can like somebody for what they do for other people or you can dislike them for the wrong things that they might have done.
I think Jack hated Ralph because jack thinks that they should follow what ever it is that he does rather than what other people do. I think I disagree with that because you don’t have to do what the other person does to get them to like you or dislike you, but if you see somebody helping out another person that would makes you want to help them to. You would feel bad for that person that needed help but you would rather ju7st go the opposite way rather than helping the person out.
Going back to what I said about Jack being mean to Ralph. I think that Ralph feels bad for the other people that Jack liked. Ralph was a good leader I thought. When it come to helping others I think I would like to help others out rather than walking the other way.

  35. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." This quote is a very true quote. Some people may look at this differently and think the opposite of me, but I think this is a very true statement.
What this quote means to me in my own words is that WE judge everyone by their clothes, their physical appearance. I am guilty of that. When I walk into a store or public place I look and if I see a person with weird clothing I judge them. I know that every person has or will judge somebody. It is an everyday thing. You may not say it out loud, but you certainly do in your head. Have you ever heard the expression, “don’t judge a book by its cover?” If you have this saying is exactly what the quote refers to.
Next time you see someone with scummy clothes or maybe they have poor hygiene, don’t look and think wow they are low lives. Just think, you have no idea what they have gone through in their life. They could have lost both their parents in a fatal car accident at a young age and they have no role model. That is just one possible thing; just imagine all of the other possibilities. I bet the person your judging could be a person that is an awesome friend. S you never know what someone has gone through in their life. Don’t judge the book by its cover. First open the book and read it, and if you don’t like the ending question it and you will find answers.

It means that people are stupid and don’t know how to give someone a chance. And people are shallow and judge people before you meet them. I agree with this quote because some people are actually like this and then in the end they could have been very nice and amazing people but they would never know. I don’t get why people don’t just give someone a chance like me and Raven she gave me a chance after she thought I was stuck up and I now look at us we are friends. I didn’t want to give some people chances but I did and found really nice and cool people. Like in Lord of The Flies how Jack doesn’t want to get to know Piggy and Ralph when in the end they could have all got along and ran the whole island together.

  38. When Colton says “We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them.” I think he means that once we decide we do not like someone, we automatically put up a wall. This wall causes us to ignore the good things in that person and see everything they do as wrong and negative. This wall keeps us from seeing who the person we hate really is.

I agree with this quote. As much as I try not to, I develop hate for people. And, once I do, I start to look at them differently. If they are nice to me, I automatically think they have a hidden motive. If they say anything even remotely mean, I just continue my thinking of how awful they are. It is hard for someone I hate to get back on my good side. I think this is true for a lot of people. Why do we do this? It's probably because it is simply easier to hate someone than it is to love them.

In Lord of the Flies, most of the boys automatically hate Piggy just because he's a little different. They often ignore him because of their dislike towards him. They never actually get to see that Piggy isn't that bad of a person and that he is actually quite helpful and nice. Maybe, if the boys hadn't been so thick headed, they would have seen Piggy for who he was. Maybe, if the boys hadn't been so quick to judge and hadn't developed hate for people they didn't know, they wouldn't have split into two tribes. Then, maybe Simon and Piggy wouldn't have died.

For the most part, I agree with your post. However, I can honestly say that hate can occur before even knowing a person. Maybe in the story it started out as just dislike between the boys which then became hate after some interaction, but in the real world, hate comes so naturally that we can exert it on total strangers. Hate is blind. It doesn't see reason. It might not make sense, but it happens. For example, I can hate a cold blooded murderer without even knowing their name.

  42. We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

This quote in a nutshell means that by instinct we hate what we don't know therefore we never really learn anything about how or why we hate certain things. It can also mean that ideas such as new technology can also be hated. Another good meaning is a new kid in school instontaniously he/she will be judged by character, apperance, and the way they act toward others.

In Arthur C. Clarke short story "Hate" ,a man from Budapest named Tibor exemplifies his hate and distaste for Russians and what they did to his friends and home land. On a dive where he was looking for mollasks he stumbled upon a sputnik sattilite inside of which had a russian astronuat. Throught the story Tibor shows how hate can turn a normal docile person into a monster, and it shows how the Americans hated the Russians during the Cold War because of the new technology of the sputnik.

In William Goldings novel The Lord Of The Flies hate is best shown between Jack and Ralph. Jack hates Ralph because he is elected chief and Jack refuses to obey his authority. If Ralph wasn't elected chief I would wager money that Jack wouldn't have tried to kill Raplh and his tribe. So in brief terms Jack hated Ralph because he did not know him and now he was supose to obey him.

Hate today still has the same meaning and sources it did 50 years ago. Today most muslums are hated and looked down upon because of a small group involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. They are also hated because they are different they aren't normal compared to our standards but in a way that is what makes them unique.

  43. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them."  ~Charles Caleb Colton

I think this quote means that we judge people before we actually get to know them. It's just how society is. If we don't like the psychical  appearance of a person, we usually don't like the person for whatever reason. We don't usually want to get to know them either after that, even though they could be the nicest, most intelligent  person on the planet. This quote is just simply saying people judge before they actually know someone, and once they have judged them they have no desire to get to know them better because you've already judged them badly.

I agree with this quote. Every one ever to exist has done this at some point or another. It's just how the human mind works. If you see some one and you don't like how they look or something you won't get to know them better. I personally try not to do this because like I said before they could be the nicest person eve, but if you don't get to know them you'll never actually know that.

  44. Kailee, I think your post was very well written. It takes a lot to hate or even love somebody. I find that most people don't get to know me or other people around me. WE ARE TO QUICK TO JUDGE.

I totally agree with your comment. People are too quick to judge others and that hate is a very strong word. Your comment is well written and you explain what the quote means to you and that you agree with the quote well. You are right- “life would be a lot easier if we were not judging everyone so much.”

I agree with what your saying. Just because someone doesn't look a certain way doesn't mean you have to hate them for it, or not want to get to know them. Other then that, your responce was written very well.

I agree on your definition of the quote especially on how most Americans hate the Muslims. You also did a good job of explaining the story Hate. Also I would bet that Jack would try to kill Ralph and his tribe.

  63. "We hate some persons because we do not know them; and will not know them because we hate them." ~Charles Caleb Colton

This quote means that everyone’s first action when meeting someone is to them instantly. Everyone judges one another, without even realizing it sometimes. People judge each other on how they dress, how they act, who they hang out with, their interests and their beliefs. This is completely unfair, but it is unlikely to change anytime soon.

I completely agree with this quote. Being a high school student, I am around judgment every day. People seem to think they know someone from the way they look and act, and therefore they have the right to hate them and be cruel to them. In a perfect world, kids would be able to express themselves freely through how they dress and act and the things they enjoy. Instead kids are forced to hide their true feelings in fear of being looked at differently. It’s easy to say “just don’t care about what other people think” but they don’t tell you how badly it sucks to be an outcast.
