Hi Gang!
I'm having some technical difficulties in posting the visual that goes with the blog this morning.  I will share the cartoon with Mr. Tombasco so you'll have the frame of reference that goes with the topic; there will also be copies of the cartoon available in my room all week.  Because of the short week and my lack of technological skills, I will give you until Monday the 27th to finish it up.  The topic is:

How do you view your destiny?  Calvin and Hobbes in the cartoon (that isn't posted here) are talking about their destiny and who is in control of that.  Do you believe the stars, your parents, your teachers, or you are in control of your future?   Think about some of the books you've read recently; who is in charge of Hero's future in Much Ado About Nothing or who was in charge of the boys' destiny in Lord of the Flies?  Now consider your own destiny and explain in 250-400 words.  (You may want to think about being more than halfway through the school year; who will determine whether you succeed or fail?)

Good luck with this one; feel free to add examples if you're having a hard time making the word count.

  1. I believe that one's destiny is ultimately controlled by themselves. I think that people often say that their destiny is controlled by a predetermined force, other people, or even the stars because they are not willing to be held responsible for the choices they make, and they are embarrassed by the outcome of their decisions. If one has failed at many things in life, it is much easier for them to blame the stars and call it destiny than it is to be mature and accept that you may not have made the best decisions.

One reason that I doubt the validity of horoscopes is that they don't match up with one another. While a horoscope in the daily paper may say you will lose wealth this month, one in a magazine might suggest that you will be very prosperous this month. How can you put your faith into something so inconsistent? Also, personality is scientifically proven to come from the cerebellum in your brain. No scientific evidence show that the position of the stars when you were born makes you who you are.

Although many people influence your life, I still think that you are the main person in charge of your destiny. Others effect your destiny slightly, but you still have the power to choose where you go in life. For example, if you planned to be a famous baseball player, but someone cuts off your foot, they have changed your destiny. But, you can choose to do something else with your life. You choose the next step towards your future, not that other person. Even when someone destroys your plans, only you have the power to pick yourself back up, and move on. You are the only one in control of the “make or break” decisions that decide who you are in twenty or thirty years. Going back to my example, you could sit on the couch for the rest of your life and say that you couldn't make anything of yourself because of the actions of that other person, or you could move past your disadvantage and be something different, like a coach or a sportscaster.

Even though many people try to say that the outcomes of their life are due to the stars or other people in their lives, they are the ones who have the most control over who they can become. Irresponsibility and fear of the magnitude of their actions causes people to push the pressure of their future onto something or someone else. I firmly believe that if you choose to be in control of your destiny and your decisions, then your destiny will be much brighter than someone who leaves their fate up to other people.

  2. I believe everyone is in control of their own destiny. This is because everyone will always make their own decisions and choices. Parents can try to raise their children to be exact clones of them, but that will never happen because, a child always has so much more influences in their life that can effect their children’s lives.

When people go out anywhere they are immediately influenced by their peers. They are influenced in the things they do, what they wear, and how they act. Teenagers are always trying to fit in with everyone else, especially their friends. They don’t always think everything through when they are asked to make any form of choice or decision. It takes a very mature person to stand up for their rights and tell their friends when they are wrong.

People are also in control of their own destiny when it comes to school and life in general. If you don’t try to do your work or perform your decisions the best that you can, you can’t earn a good grade or even good morals. Grades are earned, not given; even jobs are earned not given. No matter what the student or employee thinks a teacher or employer cannot just give a job or a grade. You have to earn everything that you do in life. Depending on the amount of work you do and the effort you put into it, you could end up with an amazing life. This is what real life is all about. Life doesn’t start in high school. Real life is filled with hard work, blood, sweat and tears.

I think that people chose their own destiny because you only get out of life what you are willing to put into it. Even in a religious aspect you must have faith in order to go anywhere in life. It is the same way with everything else as well.

  3. I believe that everyone’s destiny is in their own hands. People often think that their destiny is controlled by the stars, their parents, their teachers, or a higher force. People say this because they don’t want to be in control of the decisions they make, either good or bad. It would be easier for one to blame other objects, not put the blame on themselves.

One thing people may put their destiny on is a psychic. But the thing about psychics is that one psychic may tell you you will prosper, but then another one you go to will tell you the complete opposite. This also goes with horoscopes. If you look at two horoscopes from two different magazines or website, the will most likely contradict each other.

A person’s destiny comes from the person in general. One has to make smart decisions in life if they want to do well. For example, one who doesn’t do their homework or pay great attention in class will most likely get bad grades and fail a grade or two. The person will then blame the teachers for not teaching the right things or the right way. Grades are not given out, they are earned; just as college degrees are. Actions of other people you hang out with can also affect your destiny. If you hang out with people who have goals in life, then this will rub off on you and will make you want to succeed. A person has to earn everything they want in life. Things are 99.9% of the time earned. Even if someone does fail at doing something they wanted to accomplish, they can still start the task again and be determined to do the task. If a person has an irresponsible attitude, they will not get anywhere in life.

In my case, my destiny is to go to BOCES in 11th and 12th grade for health careers (this will get me a degree in CNA, or certified nursing assistant, CPR, and many others), finish high school and get my diploma, go back to BOCES to get my LPN degree, and then maybe go to college to get a RN (registered nurse) degree. I will then work in the hospital neonatal nursery and as a regular nurse. While I am working on getting my other degrees, I will either work at a nursing home or a regular hospital to earn some money.

Many people base their destiny on the stars, teachers, parents, and even psychics and horoscopes. But ones destiny is solely based on the person. Their actions, decisions, and personality traits all help with this destiny. Many things can contribute to this destiny, but the person’s destiny is in their own hands.

  4. Destiny, the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future, sometimes known as fate. At some point in time everyone thinks about their destiny. Some people believe destiny is controlled by the stars. I think everyone knows they control their own destiny.

People might say their destiny is controlled by the stars, even I have thought my destiny was controlled by the stars. Truthfully out destiny is controlled by ourselves. We all have choices to make and sometimes the things we chose to do don’t have the outcome we had hoped and that’s when people begin to blame the stars. It’s easier to blame some unknown source for our failure then ourselves.

I think you don’t truly know your destiny but all the decisions in your life help contribute to your destiny. You can decide your destiny by making the right choices and living your life.

Some people might say that they don’t control their destiny. They say that they can’t control their destiny that everyone influences their choices. Their teachers make them fail and their friends tell them to try things that might hurt them, but the truth is your completely in charge of those things. If you want to pass, try harder. Pay attention in class, do your work, ask for help if you don’t get anything, and get extra credit. The choice to do what your friends do is also all yours. If you follow them thats your choice you can choice to say no, you can find better influences, but if you follow them, thats your choice.

Ultimately your destiny is all on you. You chose to make the wrong choices and you can ruin that destiny and it can become something completely different, but if you make the right choices, you could possible do whatever you want with your life.

  6. I think that I control my destiny. Where I get in life and how I get there is all controlled by my doing and weather I make the right choices or not. Certain things happen because it’s simply the way it has to be, its fate, and some people believe it and some people don’t.

Some people believe that their destiny is based on the stars, parents, or anything of that sort because they don’t want to be responsible for the path they take and what choices they make and how they end up with the choices they’ve made. It’s all about choice making, if you make the choice not to care about school or your grades, that’s your own doing and you won’t end up in a very good situation. Some people just simply don’t care, no matter who they have to tell them how important certain things may be, they find other things that matter more to them. It’s also all about decision making, it’s not about what decisions you make, and it’s how you respond to them and what you do about them.

It’s not many people’s faults if they end up in a bad spot in the future. Many people may be pressured into doing wrong things, it’s how people influence you as a young child, its how your parents teach you to do right from wrong and it’s all up to you and where you’re going to take those lessons that you’ve learned. Your destiny is all based on you.

  7. I believe that you are in charge of your destiny. You make the choices in your life not the stars. You have some help you have your parents and teachers the help steer you in the right direction. You make the right and wrong choice in your life I suggest you make the right choices.

Some of the books I have read are Much Ado About Nothing Leonato sorta runs Hero’s life by who she can marry and when she can marry that man. Also in the other book Lord of the Flies Ralph runs there life and tells them what to do in order to live. Then it was jack, who by the way overthrew him.

Halfway through the year I will hopefully top 15 of my class. I will determine if I will succeed or fail. For this I would like to succeed.

  8. Destiny:The hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future; fate.

Yes, you bet. I believe that stars control my future. These white hot, glowing masses, that aren't living, or have any type of life force, somehow influence my life, and control the outcome of it. Controlling your own destiny is completely absurd, why on Earth would you do that?

The stars control my destiny by the magically powers that are given to them by the space unicorns, that travel throughout all the galaxies, providing a destiny for life forms. Then these magical stars are researched by people, written down in magazines, or in newspapers. And then by the stars' alignment, control what I'm going to do this month, or next week, or control the outcome of my year, or so on and so forth.

If you have yet to realize that I'm kidding, please consult a doctor. I personally do not believe in this nonsense called "destiny". There is no higher power such as stars, magic unicorns, or a God that controls what I do. I control what I do, or how I do it, and that is that. There may be other people that sometimes influence what I do, or the decisions I may make, but other than that, zilch. I control my life. Not a higher power like "destiny".

  9. When I think about destiny and who has control of my life I think that free will and fate go hand and hand. There are things in life that people don’t have control over, but when it comes to things like school, you decide what you want to do, when you want to do it, and how it will be done. I believe that God gives you a path to go on, but it your choice weather or not to take it because you are faced with free will through out your whole life.

It is life that is unpredictable, you could be here one second and gone the next. The way you live your life is up to you how would you choose to live it. Take one day at a time and live life to its fullest; don’t look at what is, but focus on the possibilities that are in front of you. There are many reasons to give up in life, but there are also many reasons to stick around. There are people who will love you and be there for you no matter what you do. It is these people that shape who you are as a person, as young people we are very impressionable and soak things up like sponges.

Although there are things in life that people say are destined to happen to them, no one truly knows there own fate, but then again topics like who you will marry and where you want to live are totally up to you.

My life is like a painting I never truly know what lies ahead of me, there are definitely choices. When it comes to the thought of destiny and free will, I feel that the path you decide on ultimately sets you up for your destiny.

  11. I think that I control my own destiny. Everything that I do, I choose to do. I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do. I believe that everybody controls there own destiny because you don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do. Everybody makes the wrong choice sometimes but it’s not really anybody else’s fault but your own. Although you have parents and some other elders and teachers to guide you through life, the stars do not control your destiny.

One example of how you control your life could be if you fail or not this year, its your choice because if you start doing all of your homework and study for all of your tests you could pull through and pass, but if you just stop doing all you work and give up on school altogether you will most likely not succeed. In that case its nobodies fault but yours. Another example could be what you do with your life, if you continue going to school and graduate and go on to college you will most likely find yourself with a better job than people that drop out of school and either don’t work or have a job they hate and don’t make much money doing it.

In my eyes what you make of your self and how happy you are or end up is what you make of life and how successful you are and end up being. You have to believe in yourself because you can do anything you stride for. You control your self, you are your own person.

  12. My destiny is not only controlled by me but many other people in my life. This includes my family, teachers, and my peers. They can change and guide me through life.

My teachers are a big part in determining my future. They teach me most of what I will need to know in life. If they are good teachers then I will be more prepared for life and the more likely my destiny will succeed. They can teach me about how to succeed in a career which will eventually lead to my destiny succeeding.

My parents also play a huge role in determining my destiny. They discipline me so that I succeed in school and life. They teach me to try my hardest in life and guide me to a good destiny. If parents let their children do whatever they want then it is likely that their child would be careless in life and school and their destiny will fail.

Peers are also a main aspect in determining my destiny. If I hang out with kids whop have parents that don’t care then I will start being careless like those kids. Hanging out with kids whose parents care and the children do also it will lead me to care even more and succeed in my destiny.

Destiny can be changed by people in my daily life. I believe that my destiny will succeed because my parents, teachers, and friends try their hardest to help me succeed. I also try my hardest to achieve my toughest goals so I believe that my destiny will be fulfilled. Live long and prosper.

I believe life is a series of random events and how we react to those events determine how our life will proceed.

I don’t believe in things happening for a reason or having a destiny. I think having your future planned out for you by some higher power is a bunch of crap. It just leaves people with no responsibility for their actions. Every time something goes wrong, I could just say it was meant to be, when really it was a result of something I did wrong. For example; I just lost a wrestling match. Instead of saying I did something wrong I just really sucked that match, I could just say “it was meant to be”. Sure other people make choices that affect us as well, but we can’t just blame them either. There is always a choice that can be made that decides what happens to you, and that choice has to be made by you. Let’s say I was at a party with a friend who was drunk and they were my ride home. They could decide to drive and that would of course affect me, but I decide whether or not I ride home with that friend.

Then there are things like accidents. If I were to be involved in a car accident, that would have a major impact on how the rest of my life would proceed, and it is totally out of my control. That’s not fait stepping in and directing my life. That is a random event that happened to me in particular because of what decisions I made. If I had stayed home that night instead of going out, I would have never got into this hypothetical car accident. I had no way of knowing this, but that stuff happens. So I believe that my destiny is completely up to me. It’s not necessarily the big decisions in life that determine how my life will go, but minor things as well like; if I walk or drive to school, or if I show up to an event earlier than planned or later. So these decisions are in my control, but there effects are not.

Every decision has its consequences. For every choice we make, the universe reciprocates with a positive or negative reaction.

May the Force be with you…

I believe that the people you surround yourself around are the ones that help you control but not control your destiny. I view my destiny as good and successful because I choose to surround my self with good people. I believe also that people you see and do things help control your destiny such as if you look up to a bad person all you see them do is bad things in which you want to be like them so you do those things. Such as a celebrity they help you destiny as a role model.

Although people influence ones destiny I do believe that yourself can do the same, because you choose to make the decisions to do what you do. Calvin and Hobbes in the cartoon id very interesting because sometimes you don’t know what’s going to happen next such as if you get in a car accident and you are totally paralyzed you don’t, then you don’t really have a say in what happens.

In the play Much Ado About Nothing I believe Hero has the ability to control her own destiny because she can choose to believe the rumors that have been started, or she can live her life knowing that she did not do anything wrong. In the novel Lord of the Flies I believe that the boy’s where in charge of there own destinies. I believe this because they chose to elect jack as ruler knowing the way he was going to do things.

I believe everyone has the ability to control there own destiny. Anybody can do anything if they try hard enough and become who ever they want. Also every decision has its own consequences in which it can affect your destiny.

    Stay golden pony boy.

  16. I believe that I somewhat control my destiny, but a lot of what I do is because the people I am around and where I am. I live here in Deposit because my grandmother moved my up here with her family, which included my mom. I had no control over that, but yet I am living it every day. My life would be completely different if I didn’t live here, but yet it wasn’t a result of what anything that I did. In this situation my destiny was controlled by my family. Or was it? They did not just decide to move, they moved f or a better place for their children to grow up. So was it the people that made the bad environment where they lived that led them to move, was it their fault? Or could it have been those people’s parents faults not raising them to know better? There are a lot of thing in my life that follow this same pattern that I can’t control. But the things I do in my life affect my life and may affect other people’s lives later on. My grades in school, how hard I work in dance, or even the way my parents raised me are things that may later on affect me or other people later on in life. Destiny is not something I believe in. Yes there are affecting actions to what I do in everyday life, but there is nothing or no one holding my back from making those decisions.

  19. Destiny is a funny thing, that (in my opinion) is to be mainly determined by yourself. Yes there are millions of things that can be concluded as an "obstacle" that you just need to overcome. Because in all reality your the one who makes the choices to either keep going or just give up. You can change your mind a lot or you can stick with one decision. You have full control over your life when you turn eighteen. Until then yes, your parents try to make a lot of decisions for you but in all reality they cannot make you do anything that you don't want to do. Our own choices to affect our destiny/future. Thats what makes destiny a funny, complicated thing. Because other world forces do have a good amount of influence on our own lives in the end we make the decisions. If things get screwed up it's hard to not blame those "world forces". But in all technicality we are the ones to make the best or worst of what we are dealt with.
